Marc-Louis is the son of Theodore and Suzanne Tallichet. It follows the school Orbe and Yverdon. His artistic training is first carried out with his cousins ​​Louis Ami Arlaud miniature-Jurine Arlaud and Jeremiah in Geneva. In 1822, the Academy of Lausanne invites applications for the position of Director of the new school. Arlaud is appointed and takes office December 10, 1822. He held this position until his death.

Desiring to see established in Lausanne a museum of fine arts, he donated 34,000 francs for this purpose to the city. In exchange, he asks that he be paid pension until his death. His offer was accepted in June 1834. The museum, directed by Louis Wenger (1809-1861) and inaugurated on January 1, 18411 takes its name. Arlaud is appointed curator and lead until 1844, enriching the museum's collection, which then had the bequest made by Abraham-Louis-Rodolphe Ducros in 1816, of his own works and paintings from his collection. It provides more works by contemporary artists.

The illness forced him to stay in bed at the end of 1844 and died on 1 May 1845 in Lausanne, in his apartment in the Rue de la Tour No. 8 (now rue Neuve 8). He is buried in the cemetery of the Pontaise. He bequeathed to the government Vaud 2500 francs to be used to purchase a table that will be commissioned from the painter [Charles] Gleyre, currently in Paris. This table will reproduce one of the most salient features and characteristics of the history of Major Davel and the attempt he made to the liberation of the Pays de Vaud. This oil on canvas, representing Davel to the scaffold, completed in 1850, was destroyed in 1980 during a fire.

The work of the Museum's Arlaud transferred in 1904 at the Palais de Rumine. The museum takes the name of the Cantonal Museum of Fine Arts in Lausanne.
